Saint-Josse-ten-Noode boasts a long and distinguished history, dating back to its establishment as a village adjacent to Brussels near Leuvensesteenweg crossing Maalbeek in the 19th century. Beginning in 1930s farmland south of village was gradually bought up by real estate developers from Brussels who then developed Leopold neighborhood according to Ferdinand de Meeus' plans, while by mid-20th century North district partially developed within its boundaries and by 70s all residential areas over 50 hectares were demolished for future development projects.
In Leuvensesteenweg is located a former train station dating from 1885 which now hosts Jazz Station as a meeting place for jazz musicians. Additionally, many cultural and historical attractions can be found within its boundaries; examples of these attractions are St. Joost Church from 1865 and Charlier Museum located here. From 1960 to 2001, architect J. Cuisenier designed and constructed the International Rogier Center within Borough. This modernist landmark featured offices, apartments, theater performances and shops that symbolized postwar modernism. After years of neglect, however, the center was eventually demolished between 2002 and 2006 as part of an overhaul plan called Place Rogier. Today, Belfius uses this tower formerly used by Dexia; additionally the Borough offers visitors Botanic Garden, Ateliers Mommen and numerous protected heritage sites.
