Huis van de Europese Geschiedenis, a cultural institution as well as a museum, showcases European History and European Integration in particular from the 20th Century. The European Parliament launched the museum on 6 May 2017. It also offers educational programs, cultural activities, and publications. The museum also provides a variety of online content.
Hans-Gert Pottering, in his inaugural address as President of European Parliament on February 13, 2007 launched the idea of creating a House of European History. The main goal of the project is to "deepen knowledge among all generations of Europeans about their history, and to contribute to a greater understanding of Europe's current and future developments."
A committee of experts, led by Hans Walter Hutter (Director of the House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany), submitted the basic concept of the House of European History in October 2008. The committee established a general structure, content and institutional framework for the project.
The Parliament's Bureau made the decision in June 2009 to place the future museum at the former Institut Dentaire George Eastman. This building was once a dental clinic that George Eastman had donated. In July 2009, an international architectural competition began. On March 31, 2011, three groups were selected to renovate and expand the building. They are Chaix & Morel et Associes FR, JSWD Architects DE and TPF BE. A multidisciplinary team of specialists, headed by historian Taja Vovk Van Gaal, is preparing the content of exhibitions and structure of the future Museum. The team is supported and guided by an international scientific committee led by Professor Wlodzimierz Borodziej.
The House of European History offers visitors a unique insight into the historical events and developments in Europe, and encourages critical thinking about what these events mean for today. The museum provides exhibitions, documentation and information to place these events and developments in a wider historical and critical context. The museum brings together and juxtaposes the different experiences of Europeans through history. Originality lies in the idea that the House is aiming to provide a trans-border overview of European history that takes into consideration the diversity of interpretations and perceptions. The House's aim is to give a wide audience an opportunity to better understand recent history by examining the values and ideas that have evolved over the centuries. The House of European History is designed to encourage discussion and debate on Europe and the European Union.
