Sint-Joost-ten-Node is also known as Sint-Joost and is located in the Brussels-Capital Region. Sint-Joost, with a population over 27,000, is the most densely-populated municipality both in the region and country. The area is divided into several distinct parts, such as the Rogier Square with its shopping centers and hotels, the Brabant area to the east, near the Brussels-North train station, the North Space, which has office towers for companies like Proximus, the Flemish Government (including the Phoenix Building and Hendrik Conscience Building), and finally the Leuvensesteenweg area, where a diverse population lives.
Sint-Joost is a village with a long history. It was founded near Brussels, at the Leuvensepoort where the Leuvensesteenweg crosses the Maalbeek. In the 19th century, Brussels developers gradually acquired the farmland south of the village beyond the Naamsepoort and turned it into the Leopold neighbourhood. In the second half 20th century a portion of the North Space on the Sint-Joost territory was developed. A 50-hectare residential area was completely demolished in the 1970s for this project.
Visitors can enjoy the Neo-Baroque Sint-Joost Church, built in 1865. The Charlier Museum is also located here, as well as the former railway station from 1885 on Leuvensesteenweg, now a protected landmark and home to Jazz Station, an informal meeting place for musicians. This neighborhood has a rich heritage with many sites protected as heritage. These include the former International Rogier Center and the Botanical Garden.
