Koningswijk (the Royal Borough) lies to the eastern side of Brussels' five-pointed center and features numerous government buildings designed in Louis XVI style neoclassicism. The Royal Borough is bordered to the north by Leuvenseweg and Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ter-Sneeuw neighborhood; to the east by Little Ring; south by Zavel (Brederodestraat and Ruysbroeckstraat); and west by neighborhood around Grand Place. According to certain definitions, the Putterij neighborhood with its Central Station and cathedral could also fall within Koningswijk. Not only can one find government buildings here, but there are also embassies from countries like the US, France, and Spain between Hertogstraat and Little Ring (such as those representing their countries of origin). While neoclassicism dominates, some Art Nouveau structures such as Musical Instruments Museum Old England building offer striking designs as well.
Koningswijk lies partially within the upper city (Coudenberg) and partially along a slope between them, known as Treurenberg in its southern half and Kunstberg in its northern half. It's considered an exclusive central neighborhood.
Koningswijk was established during 1775-1830 under the impulse of Austrian governor Charles of Lorraine prior to Belgium achieving independence. Ruins of Palace on Coudenberg were cleared away, levelling its higher plateau. A portion of the slope between upper city (Coudenberg) and lower city was known as Hofberg in 15th-18th centuries; under King Leopold II a so-called Kunstberg with numerous museums was established south of Royal Borough by way of Zavel, providing connectivity between high and low areas of the city; whilst to the north of Coudenberg you'll find Sint-Michielsberg (around its cathedral) as well as Treurenberg.
