Typically the neighborhood developed between two hills - Dobbelenberg in the north and Harenberg in the south - but also features Zennevallei Wetland on its western edge as well as farming plateaus that were once covered with heath in its eastern corner.

Haren was first populated during the Middle Ages when its village center was dominated by a small church dating back to 11th century and square farmhouse called Castrum, both located near Zenne riverbanks. Verdunstraat ran through Haren as an old road leading towards Cologne; at end of Ancien Regime Haren became its own municipality as roads from Brussels-Diegem improved and new "stone road" extended as far as Kampenhout.

Haren-Noord station was established during the late 19th century, and soon afterward its surrounding area began to flourish as an industrial center. Heavy industries settled near Haren-Buda in northern Haren to take advantage of Chemin de Fer Industriel de Haren as their connection to main line railway networks. Following World War II, these industries diminished though Haren's neighborhood continued its steady development with NATO having established their headquarters nearby.
