Wezembeek-Oppem is a neighborhood situated within the Belgian province of Vlaams-Brabant that is home to over 14,000 residents. Comprising two former villages: Oppem and Wezembeek, it forms part of Greater Brussels Area as an urbanized region with dense population density and urbanized infrastructure. Though not part of Brussels Capital Region proper, this borough lies close by Sint-Pieters-Woluwe; thus making this neighborhood easily accessible.
Wezembeek-Oppem has its origins in its establishment as a hamlet along the road connecting Mechelen to Tervuren in the valley of the Wezembeek river. Wezembeek lay between Sterrebeek, Kraainem and Oppem, connected to Kraainem via Alfons Lenaertsstraat to Woluwe valley and Woluwe region via Alfons Lenaertsstraat. Under the old regime, Wezembeek and Oppem were considered two distinct lordships under Vilvoorde's jurisdiction of Brussels quarter in Duchy of Brabant. After 1796, however, Wezembeek-Oppem was classified as part of Sint-Stevens-Woluwe canton of Dijle department but remains an independent municipality within Province Vlaams-Brabant today.
Wezembeek-Oppem offers many notable attractions, including the Sint-Pieterskerk with its Romanesque west tower, Gothic choir and church organ by Adrianus Rochet from Nijvel (1793). Additionally, since 1982 the Sint-Pietersplein has been protected as a village landscape and serves as an attractive gathering point for local residents.
