The Scheepvaartkwartier is also known as Nieuwe Werk and is located along the Nieuwe Maas. Nieuwe Werk, a protected cityscape, is bordered to the north by Westzeedijk, the east by Zalmhaven, the south by Willemskade, Westerkade, and Parkkade, and the west side of Rotterdam's Parkhaven. The Veerhaven, and its nearby Parklaan, with its massive construction dating from 1900, form the heart of the neighborhood. On the Veerkade, you will find the Calandmonument. It is a monument to Pieter Caland. Some of the most beautiful buildings in the area are the white, colonial style, monumental buildings that date from around 1865 on the Westerkade.
Nieuwe Werk's history dates back to 1840, when city architect W.N. Rose planned it as a planned quarter of the city. It was originally called Nieuwe Werk. The plots were divided and the Veerhaven became the main feature. The Westerhaven used to be located in the same area, but it was filled up in 1910. The wealthy Rotterdam residents, including coal trader D.G. Parklaan was home to banker Marten Mees and van Beuningen.
In World War II, Nieuwe Werk escaped the majority of the Rotterdam bombings in May 1940. Only the easternmost block, which borders the Leuvehaven and is near the Willemsplein was hit. Nieuwe Werk was the main center for the German occupation forces during World War II in Rotterdam due to its housing. The Ortskommandant, Feldgendarmerie, Kriegsmarine and Hafenkommandant were located at Parklaan.
