Rubroek dates back to 1283 when it first made an appearance in an act about Rubroke craftspeople, later to become known as Ruychbroek and Ruychpolder - its name translating as "wild and rugged, un-reclaimed marshland." Formerly, its two parts, Old-Rubroek in Hillegersberg and Voor-Rubroek in Rotterdam respectively were administered by millkeepers appointed by Rotterdam city in the mid 16th century as separate entities separated by Oude Zeedijk canals.

Rubroek began being developed for residential purposes starting around 1865, providing housing for Rotterdam's growing population. Rubroek became home to the Rotterdam Livestock Market as well as jamin factory and Driessen chocolate factory - as well as being bombed during World War II and rebuilt thereafter; Jamin factory on Crooswijksekade moved to Oosterhout by 1957 while Livestock Market held its final event until 1973 before large scale demolition and new construction took place across middle and north neighborhoods; one building that survived this destruction wave is Verlosserkerk on Goudse Rijweg which now provides student housing - one of these buildings survives being the Verlosserkerk on Goudse Rijweg which now provides student accommodation.
