Noordereiland, a neighbourhood in Rotterdam (Netherlands), is located on an island of the Nieuwe Maas river. This neighborhood is situated on an island within the Nieuwe Maas River, connected to the mainland via the Willemsbrug en Koninginnebrug. It is located in the Feijenoord District of Rotterdam-Zuid and has a population of approximately 3600. The island has been designated as a protected urban landscape since 2005.
Noordereiland used to be a sandbar along the Maas River, where criminals would hang at the admiralty gaol. The island's name comes from the Noorderhaven, which is now the Koningshaven. It was excavated in 1872-1874 by C.B. van der Tak. This excavation separated Noordereiland and the island of Fijenoord. Van der Tak and Rose played an important role in the development. Thorbecke, Heemskerk Pincoffs, Heemskerk Heemskerk also played a part. Achilles de Khotinsky, a Russian, built the first incandescent lamps and accumulator factories in the Netherlands in Prins Hendrikkade no. 35 in 1884. Around 8,000 people were living on the island in 1900. De Hef, a bascule-bridge, and the Koninginnebrug were installed between 1926 and 29 to replace the swing bridges. In 1907 the city of Rotterdam built a wooden floating swimming pool on the Maaskade. This facility was closed in 1962 because of polluted water and lack funds for maintenance.
The island had a high level of economic activity until the end of the 20th century. On the Maaskade (on the north side) and the Prins Hendrikkade (on the south side), the inland vessels could be as many as five or six rows deep. In 1915, the Steamboat and Transport Company W. van Driel was founded in a Maaskade building. It grew to be the largest transshipment firm in Rotterdam. The building was used by Ooms since 1979. A large number of captains of ships lived on the island. The middle class prospered. The island had four grocers in the early 1990s. There was also a shoemaker and four butchers. Two pharmacies were still open, as well as two bakers. A post office with ATMs and a bank with ATMs. In the late 1990s, only one baker remained, and the shoemaker, along with all butchers, disappeared. Plusmarkt Van Dijk is a descendant of Greengrocer Van Dijk in Burgemees.
