Feijenoord is a neighborhood located south of Rotterdam's Nieuwe Maas river. The neighborhood is bordered by Spoorweghaven to its west and Koningshaven and Nieuwe Maas to its north and east, constituting part of Feijenoord district and traversed by major road Oranjeboomstraat; it was formed largely due to port and railway location; Feijenoord lies directly under one such railway connection between Rotterdam and Dordrecht while many streets follow routes connected by other railway lines to port areas; today Feijenoord is considered "priority Neighborhood."

Feijenoord has an expansive history dating back to its time as an island in the river, where it was initially known as "de Noord," or "the North," due to its location at the edge of land. Rotterdam acquired the island through purchases in 1591 and 1658. Over time, silt accumulation brought Feijenoord closer to IJsselmonde Island before eventually connecting it to mainland through land reclamation in 1795.

In the late 19th century, Fijenoord shipyard was established on an island as part of a sleepboat company and played an essential part in industrializing and expanding this region. Unfortunately, as shipbuilding industries declined economically and poverty became an issue; therefore today revitalization efforts are underway in this neighborhood in order to improve housing, transportation and economic development.
