Kralingse Veer refers to a ferry service that connected Kralingen and IJsselmonde; mentioned as early as 1333 but likely much older; perhaps part of a Roman road network? Over time, an inn, the ferryman's house, a stable for horses and fishing activities have developed around the ferry. Fishing was an integral source of revenue in this area; fishing for salmon became more specialized during the mid-18th century with construction of market buildings and fish markets on Schaardijk. At that time, Kralingse Veer held the largest salmon market in the Netherlands - known as Zalmhuis. However, by late 19th century catches began to decrease; according to Algemeen Handelsblad 140 salmon were sold within one week in December 1889 at two guilders per half kilo. Salmon populations decreased due to normalization of Rhine flows, overfishing, and increasing water pollution levels. They eventually disappeared from Nieuwe Maas; fish market building demolished; however since 2002 Zalmhuis has been rebuilt into a restaurant.
Kralingse Veer was established along the Schielands Hoge Zeedijk in 1954. Due to flood disasters in 1953 and 1955, nearly all houses along its length were demolished on orders from Schieland water board; however, these areas have since been rebuilt into charming and peaceful communities.
