Morgenstond West is a postwar neighborhood built in The Hague’s Escamp district in the 1950s. The neighborhood is bordered by several areas including Wateringse Veld Bouwlust Vrederust Loosduinen Leyenburg Zuiderpark and Moerwijk. The boundaries are defined by Erasmusweg Dedemsvaartweg Zuidwoldestraat Vreeswijkstraat and Loevesteinlaan.
Morgenstond is included in the list of 40 problem areas in The Netherlands. Leyweg is the most prominent location in Morgenstond. It is home to Leyweg Shopping Center. Morgenstond originally belonged to the municipality of Loosduinen which was annexed in 1923 by The Hague. Construction began on the neighborhood in 1950, and it was completed in 2005. There is a cityhall for the Escamp district in Morgenstond East, which is where the Escamp Library is located.
Willem Dudok's efforts to plan the city of The Hague in the late 1940s are closely linked to the history of Morgenstond. Dudok's "Structural Plan for Greater The Hague", published in 1949, divided southwest The Hague up into four residential areas: Morgenstond Bouwlust Berestein and Vrederust. South Holland demanded that greenery be left between the neighborhood and Westland. Berestein construction did not go as Dudok had intended. Berestein, as Dudok had envisioned it, was not built.
Dudok based his Morgenstond design from 1949 on the 1935 "Design Expansion Plan For The Hague Escamppolder Madepolder Ockenburgh". The rectangular shape of the neighborhood is divided by six major roads. Morgenstond, of all the postwar neighborhoods in The Hague is the most homogenous in terms construction. Dudok decided where each building block should be placed. Morgenstond's perimeter is closed with four-story buildings along the main roads. The interior of the neighborhood, however, is open. In the original plan, shops were to be consolidated in plazas. The streets were constructed in 1950 and the first homes in 1951. The Hague initially planned to build 7,700 houses in Morgenstond. However, this number was increased to 9,200.
