Rustenburg and Oostbroek were historically part of Oost-Escamppolder which was a part of now-dissolved municipality Loosduinen. Oost-Escamppolder, which was part of the now-dissolved municipality Loosduinen until 1920s, was used for pastures and horticultural purposes. At the time, the Rustenburg Country House and the Oostbroek Farm were the main developments. This is how the neighborhood got its name. The Hague annexed the area in 1902. The Rustenburg and Oostbroek neighbourhood was built between 1920 to 1940. Its design was influenced heavily by architect and urban planner Berlage.
Rustenburg and Oostbroek's housing stock is dominated by single-family houses and apartment blocks, the majority of which are owner-occupied. Some rental housing is available, but the majority of it is owned by private people. Originally built for the more privileged working class, it is now a multi-cultural neighborhood. Rustenburg is more diverse than Oostbroek, while Oostbroek is more uniform. Rustenburg is divided into two distinct neighborhoods, the north and the south. Each has its own unique character. The northern part is composed of three-story apartments, courtyards and houses with one or two stories. There are also schools, a public swimming pool and a sports area. In the southern part, there are two- and three-story apartment blocks and single-family houses. Oostbroek can also be divided into Oostbroek Noord and Oostbroek Zuid. Oostbroek has a more uniform architectural and urban planning than Rustenburg. In 2000, the neighborhood plan for the area included revitalizing the public spaces as well as improving the housing stock.
