The Transvaalkwartier neighborhood in The Hague lies southwest of its city center and is bordered by Loosduinsekade, Monstersestraat, De Heemstraat, Hoefkade, Dierenselaan Zuiderpark and De La Reyweg. Built between 1900 and 1935, its international atmosphere was cemented in 1938 when Haagse Markt moved here bringing with it an added global dimension.
The name Transvaalkwartier derives from the Second Boer War in South Africa (1899-1902). This conflict had an enormous impact in the Netherlands, where many sympathized with Boers (original Dutch) fighting British control of South Africa from 1852-1902 (known by its popular name of Transvaal). Transvaal was taken over by Britain after this short republic had existed from 1852-1902 as well. Transvaalkwartier lies adjacent to Groente-en Fruitmarkt, Rustenburg, Oostbroek Regentessekwartier and Schilderswijk neighborhoods.
Prior to 1895, two remarkable buildings stood in what would later become Transvaal: Castle Westerbeek from around 1430 was demolished in 1794 at the corner of De La Reyweg/Bothastraat; country estate Engelenburg first mentioned in 1570 was mentioned for housing purposes via its Loosduinseweg canal, while an open field adjacent to Beeklaan and Moerweg ditch ran De La Reykade which connected directly with Loosduinsekade - both landmarks once stood as landmarks!
In 1898, the street plan for this neighborhood was approved and houses began construction between what are now known as De La Reyweg, Steynlaan and Loosduinsekade. Later on in the century Paul Krugerlaan and side streets were added as well. Housing was constructed for both lower middle class families and workers relocating during the industrial revolution, and this part of the neighborhood primarily featured monotonous revolution buildings built by speculators at poor quality. With the Housing Act of 1901, the government attempted to curtail construction of these types of houses. Housing construction started again around 1914 in the areas south of Scheeperstraat and Hoefkade. Here too, density was high due to these blocks being constructed so closely together...
