Kortenbos boasts an extensive history, dating back to its formation as part of Die Haghe, the precursor village to The Hague. Street names like Geest and Slijkeinde suggest it was once part of a medieval ring road surrounding a farming settlement. In the seventeenth century, this area retained a rural charm as indicated by its name - Oude Boomgaardstraat. But by the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it transformed into an active working-class neighborhood, with Westeinde and Vleerstraat serving as bustling shopping streets. Many cheaper houses fell into disrepair and in the early 20th century large-scale demolition was considered necessary in several areas of Kortenbos. Housing projects consisting of apartment buildings and flats were developed, while Kortenbos itself became a neighborhood park.
In the 1960s, a redevelopment plan known as the Kortenbos ordinance was put into action, consisting of wide access roads and commercial building blocks primarily used for commercial purposes. When combined with expansion of Westeinde Hospital, these changes caused significant shifts to the neighborhood causing resistance from both residents and shopkeepers alike. By 1971, however, rehabilitation of Kortenbos as residential area while still connecting it to city center was prioritized; crossways were abandoned altogether in 1981 whereas large scale changes such as new hospitals become visible; former ZHB brewery site now replaced by high rise flats containing flats of high rise buildings among other changes that occurred simultaneously throughout.
