It primarily comprises single-family homes and apartment buildings with limited high-rise development. Residents typically visit the nearby city center for shopping, dining and entertainment options. Their neighborhood is relatively isolated making it typical residential area; small scale business activity has always been prevalent here though this has not always been true. Boomsluiterskade/Christoffel Plantijnstraat was home to the Staatsdrukkerij until the 1990s; also located nearby was a brewery on Zwetstraat and margarine factory on Scheepmakersstraat. Rental and owned housing can both be found in Rivierenbuurt; it can be divided into three distinct areas: Uilebomen, Rivierenbuurt-Noord and Rivierenbuurt-Zuid.
