Voorhout is a neighborhood in The Hague, Netherlands known for its picturesque streets and historical significance. One of its main draws is Lange Voorhout - one of The Hague's most well-known streets dating back to 15th century when buildings first started being constructed there. Margaretha van Kleef donated land for an Order of Dominicans monastery that eventually stood here (Kloosterkerk 1420 still stands today).
The Lange Voorhout, named for its location at the edge of Haagse Bos (Hague Forest), developed into its current L-shape gradually through construction of Lange Vijverberg (1375-1400) and strip between Hoge Nieuwstraat and Voorhout (1400-1475). Later on during Emperor Charles V's rule in 16th century, four rows of lime trees were planted along Lange Voorhout to give it stately appearance; these still-standing trees earned it its current name "Lange Lindelaan or Lange Lindelaan."
In the 17th century, Voorhout Park became a favorite gathering place of The Hague's elite; people would promenade there. Prince Maurits tried unsuccessfully to create a canal through Lange Voorhout; many small houses on Lange Voorhout were demolished and replaced with grand buildings which still stand today and many have become national monuments.
In the 19th century, Lange Voorhout was temporarily renamed Cour Napoleon while Lange Vijverberg was temporarily referred to as Cour de l'Imperatrice; these names were soon reinstated; notable residents in Lange Voorhout include Maria Duyst van Voorhout who left an estate worth several million euros towards education for gifted orphans in The Hague, Delft, and Utrecht.
