Arendsdorp, a neighborhood in The Hague's Rijksbeschermd Stadsgezicht Benoordenhout district, is located on the remnants of an old estate and country house. This is the remnant of a former estate and country home. A large part of Benoordenhout was built on land which was once a part of this estate.
Arendsdorp's history dates back to 1586 when jonkheer Arend Van Dorp bought a plot of land that included a farmhouse. The farmhouse was divided into two parts: the front part, which he lived in and the back portion that he leased. A separate pavilion for a country retreat was built around 1650. The "koepel" is a two-story octagonal building with a thatched roofing. In 1737 there were a house, coach house, gatekeeper's and gardener's houses, all dating from around 1700. There was also a star-grove, an apple orchard and vegetable garden. The gardener's home is called "De Rietjes."
In 1845 Arendsdorp and Oostduin were combined. Oostduin was established in 1560 but it wasn't called Oostduin till 1810. The house at Oostduin, which was destroyed during World War II by a V2 missile, was demolished. Marie countess Bylandt, the last resident of Oostduin, agreed that a senior living complex would be built where she lived. The municipality permitted this even though the land was intended for small scale housing and no office buildings were planned. The countess challenged the city's expansion plan of 1911, and fought the municipality.
The gatekeeper's home from around 1700 still stands today on Wassenaarseweg, along with the entrance gate made of wrought iron. From the street, you can also see the gardener's home, which is also on Wassenaarseweg. Now, it is home to the M.A.O.C. Countess of Bylandt Foundation. Oostduin, Arendsdorp and a portion of it are owned by Oostduin Foundation. The rest is managed by municipality. Since 1958, the park is open to the general public on a permanent basis. It was previously open for a few hours every now and then since 1930. The Arendsdorp Service Flat, built in 1985, is located on the edge of this park.
