Bezuidenhout-Oost, a Hague neighborhood named for its location east of the Hague Forest, is located in The Hague. The area was once the northern border of The Hague. The Marlot neighbourhood, which was built on the border of Wassenaar in the 1920s, was not included. Bezuidenhout's street names are mainly based on the names of former governors general in the WIC and VOC areas, such as Jacob Mossel, and others, in India. They also include Peter Stuyvesant, who founded New Amsterdam, and Jan van Riebeek who founded Cape Town in South Africa.
Bezuidenhout lies north of the center, against the Hague Forest. It is roughly bordered by the Leiden - The Hague railway, the Rijnstraat and the Carel Reinierszkade. The Stationsbuurt neighborhood is bordered by the Hague Forest, Mariahoeve and Marlot neighborhoods.
In the Middle Ages, the area which later became known by the name Bezuidenhout as "Heerenveen", was known as "Heerenveen". Turf cutters extracted peat from the area to be used by the count of Holland. Heerenveen was a part of Veenpolder that included Binkhorstpolder. In 1403, the Scheijingwetering was created between Heerenveen, Voorburg and was later changed to Schenk. In 1442, the Delfland Water Board decided to build two wooden locks and water defenses to protect the turf of the count from waterlogging. This was due to a lowering groundwater level. In 1446, the Veenpolder (including the Heerenveen) received its first mill, the Oude Veenmolen.
