Marlot is located in The Hague's eastern area. The city purchased a 91 hectare estate in 1917, with the intent to create a villa park. The city hired H.E. Suyver and W. Schurmann were hired to design the neighborhood. They created a plan which separated the woods, the 17th century house and the villa area with a large open field and pond. The design resulted in two squares perpendicular to each other, Zuidwerfplein en Bloklandenplein. The Hague has 19 views that are protected. Marlot and Reigersbergen is one of them.
Marlot's architecture is one of its most notable features. It is considered to be a fine example of the Nieuwe haagse school. The city wanted to create a neighborhood of luxury villas, similar to Houtrust or Vogelwijk but with a more cohesive look. The original plan only included a third, but Co Brandes' designs were so well received that he ended up designing the entire park. De Hoogwerf is a converted 17th century farmhouse that can be found today.
The Parkflat is one of Marlot's most famous architectural features. It was designed by Co Brandes. The Parkflat combines a country home with an apartment building. The tower and symmetrical design of the apartment building, as well as the mirror ponds surrounding it, give an impression that this is a castle, not an apartment complex. The Parkflat has suffered from war damages, which have destroyed much of its original design. However, it still remains a symbol of Marlot’s architectural heritage.
