Westbroekpark is a park with a long history dating back to mid-19th century. Pieter Westbroek developed a plan for the park in 1887 but it wasn't approved. In 1890 a plan designed by tuinarchitect Zocher Jr., was partially implemented. During World War I, the park served as an internment center for British soldiers that had crossed from Belgium to the Netherlands. Westbroek received a commission in 1920 to design a park, but without any buildings. The plan was approved by the city in 1922, and completed in 25. In 1926, the park was renamed Westbroekpark to honor Pieter Westbroek. The park still has a large meadow in the middle, which hosted the Indische tentoonstelling of 1932. The International Rosarium, which features around 300 beds and 20,000 rose bushes in bloom during summer, was founded in 1961.
