Vissershaven's rich history dates back to the year 1904 when Scheveningen's first harbor was opened. At the time, a dunes area separated the village from the harbor. The area between the village, and the harbor, began to develop with the introduction of the new logger fishing vessel, which was faster and easier to maneuver than the traditional bomschuit. The streets were named for the fishing industry. For example, Kompasstraat was given, as well as Vleetstraat and Trawlerstraat. At the time these streets were thought to be wide, and provided a unique experience to the first residents moving from the village.

In the 1930s, a second harbour was constructed between the Zeesluisweg en the Westduinweg. Two harbors were linked by a narrow passage known as "de pijp." In the vicinity, a dry dock and fish market were built. A neighborhood was developed between the harbor and Westduinweg where businesses such as fishmongers, cooperages and smokehouses were located. A part of the area was set aside for residential purposes.

After the Second World War the importance of fishing decreased, and the second harbor became more tourist-oriented. Vissershaven today is a unique mix of old and new with historical and modern structures.
