Tuinwijk-Oost, also known as Votulast, is a neighborhood located in Utrecht's Noordoost district. Utrecht is the Dutch capital and the largest city in the province of Utrecht. It is located in the south of Tuindorp, and administratively it consists of two neighbourhoods: Tuinwijk-West with a population of 2530 and Tuinwijk-Oost with 2440.
Tuinwijk is a neighborhood that was built after 1900. It has a variety of character. The area surrounding the Roman Catholic Joseph Church in the adjacent Staatsliedenbuurt is poorer. Further along Van der Mondestraat are better-quality middle-class homes. De Tuinwijk, an area in the Amsterdam School style built with a Dutch architectural flair and designated as a National Monument, is one of Tuinwijk's most prominent features. This area links the poorer Van der Mondestraat to the wealthier area. The Tuinwijk, built in 1921 with stones left over from De Inktpot (the third main building for the Dutch Railway Company), was completely renovated between 2008 and 2009. The Tuinwijk underwent a complete renovation in 2008 and 2009
Tuinwijk also has many buildings built in the Amsterdam School's style. These include "Het Badhuis", which is now a restaurant and hotel; the transformer on the corner between Melis Stokestraat and Burmanstraat; and the Gerardus Majella School, located on Van der Mondestraat. Two major streets intersect the neighborhood, the Zwarte Water (a canal used in the past to transport turf) and the Willem van Noortstraat which runs from the Willem van Noortplein into the Pieter Nieuwlandstraat. Willem van Noortstraat, the main street in the neighborhood, is home to many businesses and shops. It also includes the former postoffice, which was converted into a grocery store by Albert Heijn.
Tuinwijk has a lot of greenery. The Willem van Noortplein features a green space, Majoor Bosshardt Plantsoen, which houses the library, Griftpark, a large park, and 't Lommer, a small park hidden behind Floris Heermalestraat. Tonny van derlinden was a famous resident of Tuinwijk. He was the midfielder for the championship team DOS (the precursor to FC Utrecht). He owned a cigar store at the Willem van Abcoud.
