Wittevrouwen, a neighborhood in the Dutch city Utrecht's northeastern region, is located on the border of the Netherlands. Wittevrouwen, historically, was a suburban area within the city's limits. From 1573 to 1795 it was called Wijk I. The neighborhood is bounded by the Biltsche Grift in the north and east. In the south it borders the Biltstraat. To the west, there are the Wittevrouwensingel, Griftpark, and Wittevrouwensingel. The neighborhood is located directly next to the city centre and adjacent to the Buiten Wittevrouwen district in the Oost district. It also borders the Zeeheldenbuurt and Vogelenbuurt neighborhoods on the opposite side of Griftpark. Residents of Wittevrouwen often consider the Zeeheldenbuurt to be part Wittevrouwen.
Wittevrouwen gets its name from a convent of nuns that lived by the rules of Saint Norbert. The convent was also known as the Wittevrouwenklooster, or "White Women's Convent," named after the color of the nuns' habits. In the Middle Ages, the convent was situated in the northeastern corner of the walled-city near Ridderschapstraat. The convent slowly fell out of use after the Utrecht government converted to Protestantism. It was finally demolished. Wittevrouwenpoort was the name of the city gate located at the end the Wittevrouwenstraat. It was used to enter the city, and it was also the endpoint for an ancient route that connected De Bilt with Utrecht. The medieval gate was replaced in the 17th century by a new gate designed by Pieter Post. However, this gate was destroyed during the second half 19th century.
The area, besides the Biltstraat buildings, was also known in the Middle Ages for the Heilig Kruis Gasthuis near the Kruisstraat en Gasthuisstraat as well as several small country estates such Gildesteijn. (From which later the Veterinary University on the Grift developed). Gildesteijn is still standing today and used as a conference centre.
