Amsterdam-Noord is a neighborhood located north of the IJ river in Amsterdam, home to 99,238 residents as of January 1st 2020 and covering 49.01 square kilometers. Amsterdam-Noord's history is intertwined with its position on the northern banks of the IJ river. At first, its borders were limited to Volewijck peninsula - which Amsterdam took control of in 1393 - where executed criminals' bodies were displayed as deterrents until 1795. Later in 17th century, however, Buikslotertrekvaart canal was constructed connecting it with other areas like Buiksloot, Broek in Waterland Monnickendam Edam Hoorn; which was funded with tolls collected in toll house built around that same area.
In 1876, Amsterdam-Noord saw tremendous development due to the opening of Noordzeekanaal which made Amsterdam harbor accessible by steamboat. This spurred on numerous shipping companies such as Stoomvaartmaatschappij Nederland and KNSM as well as ship repair yards like Amsterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij on the northern bank and shipbuilders like NDSM on the southern. Additionally, city council decided in 1900 to relocate a sulfuric acid factory from Overtoom into Amsterdam-Noord along with various industrial companies such as Kromhout ship engine factory and Drakafabriek cable factory.
Due to Amsterdam-Noord's development and growth, it has evolved into an engaging and bustling neighborhood, boasting a diverse population.
