Construction of the Hoofdkanaal began in 1908 but was stopped halfway because the Willemsluis canal needed to be relocated first. In the meantime, preparation of land and construction of Meeuwenlaan started. Land was leased from 1910 for housing construction, for the Vliegenbos, and for industrial establishment. As it became apparent that the Willemsluis would not be moved, it was also clear that Hoofdkanaal couldn't be finished for the rerouting shipping, and that therefore the bridge over the IJ couldn't be built. A second ferry (Valkenwegpont), as an alternative, was built. This was initially sufficient but, as the population increased, the ferry became inadequate.
