Oostenburg is one of Amsterdam's three Eastern Islands. Established artificially during the latter half of 17th century in a marshy area along IJ river, this neighborhood sits between Wittenburg island and Czaar Peterbuurt; hence its name "Oostenburg", as an indicator to its most eastern location compared to Kattenburg and Wittenburg.
Oostenburg can trace its history back to the 17th and 18th centuries when it was developed by stadslandmeter Cornelis Danckerts de Rij. Later in 1660, United East India Company (VOC) purchased it and used it as a center for shipbuilding and trade for over two centuries - this activity formed the core of Amsterdam's international trading metropolis. Most notable among VOC's warehouses was Oost-Indisch Zeemagazijn designed by Daniel Stalpaert as its centerpiece structure on Oostenburg Island.
