Oostelijke Eilanden (Eastern Islands) in Amsterdam were created beginning in 1650 through reclaiming land from both sides of the IJ and digging up eastern meadows. They can be found north of Hoogte Kadijk and include Kattenburg, Wittenburg and Oostenburg; Czaar Peterbuurt is also considered part of this region even though it did not become established until well into the 19th century after city walls had been taken down.
Since history began, the Eastern Islands have been home to shipyards and suppliers that make use of their favorable location on the IJ. Additionally, surgeons and pharmacists settled there too. The Amsterdam Admiralty held court on Kattenburg where Marine Etablissement Amsterdam currently resides; Dutch East India Company warehouses and shipyards can still be seen there; most notable building is Lands Zeemagazijn which houses the Netherlands Maritime Museum since 1973; its neighbour Kattenburg was completely demolished during urban renewal efforts during urban renewal efforts during which modern new construction that does not resemble its earlier self with small houses and narrow streets reminiscent of its old neighbour Kattenburg at all!

Wittenburg boasts the Oosterkerk church; on Oostenburg there are Werkspoor buildings as well as East-Indisch Pakhuis (described by VOC as having thick walls that will stand for centuries) which since 1998 has been converted to apartments.
Kattenburgers were notorious for being rowdy; often called Bijltjes after their main carpentry tool. In May 1787, Orangist Kattenburgers rebelled against Patriot-minded regents of Amsterdam.
