Wittenburg is one of three Eastern Islands reclaimed from the IJ during the second half of the 17th century. This neighborhood takes its name from one of its first shipyards established by Jan Witheyn (1610-1662) and Jacob Burggraaf (1610-circa 1681 in 1657. Construction on streets and plots began in 1661; the earliest record of Wittenburg can be found as far back as 1662. Running along both lengths of the island were two parallel streets named Grote Wittenburgerstraat and Kleine Wittenburgerstraat - which would later come to define its identity. Wittenburg took decades to construct, with completion occurring by the late 17th century. All plots remained available by 1810 for use - its location being between Nieuwe Vaart (Wittenburgergracht), Kattenburgervaart, Dijksgracht and Wittenburgervaart canals.
Wittenburg was also home to many private shipyards that provided employment. These shipyards mainly supplied products for both the Admiralty in Kattenburg, as well as VOC on Oostenburg.
Wittenburg is dominated by the large Protestant Oosterkerk Church from 1671. Though closed for worship in 1962, between 1978 and 1985 its restoration took place. Near this church stood Catholic Sint-Annakerk Church from 1899 until 1978 - both structures can still be seen today.
Wittenburg saw most of its historic buildings demolished between 1970 and 1988, replaced with new structures erected along the Wittenburgergracht, except along the Oosterkerk from 1671 which remains.
New streets have been built, such as Jacob Burggraafstraat and Jan Witheijnstraat - named for 17th-century entrepreneurs - while where there were buildings between Kleine Wittenburgerstraat and Grote Wittenburgerstraat there is now an undeveloped strip, initially without its own name but often called 'Wittenburgerplein' - although since 2007 this space has been known as Marie Altelaarplein.
