Nieuwmarkt en Lastage is an historic neighborhood located east of Amsterdam's medieval city walls and known for its spectacular city views and rich history.
The Lastage area, outside the city walls, was part of its freedom that was granted by Count Albert in 1386 and confirmed by William of Bavaria in 1404. Citizens' rights did not extend into this area, which was subject to city laws but not their rights as individuals. Soft ground could not be raised or hardened to stop attackers from placing cannons there. Certain parts were barred from construction to maintain clear fields of fire while in other places only wood could be used as construction material to easily be destroyed in case of attack.
As all city freedoms flourished, Lastage emerged as a business area in the 15th century where ships would load ballast onto them (hence its name "Lastaedse," meaning ballast). By 16th century it had developed into the city's industrial and port area; by mid-16th century there were five rope makers, several mast makers, several shipyards for brewing ships, marshy swampy areas located outside city walls had less involvement with taxes or regulations related to spatial planning; residents or owners had less involvement with taxes or regulations related to spatial planning regulations compared to taxes or regulations regarding spatial planning regulations; instead the Waal bend in IJ offered shallow waters suitable for winter mooring vessels during cold spells of trade compared with trade routes along the IJ where ships would anchor over winter time allowing their vessels to moor themselves.
During the Gelder Wars, Charles of Guelders' troops threatened the Lastage several times. When they occupied Weesp and Muiden in 1508, Amsterdam's city council ordered that its Lastage be burned as a precaution; on December 16, however, Guelders themselves set fire to shipyards nearby.
