Kadijken is a neighborhood located north of Artis Zoo. The name refers to two main streets within its boundaries, Hoogte Kadijk and Laagte Kadijk; Hoogte Kadijk runs parallel with Laagte Kadijk; this long strip of land measures 900 meters long by 170 wide; bordered by Entrepotdok to its south, Nieuwe Herengracht on its western end, Nieuwe Vaart on its northern edge and Sarphatistraat on its eastern edge.
Kadijken neighborhood is divided into two sections, a larger western section and smaller eastern section, by a former lock complex that forms a canal between Nieuwe Vaart and Entrepotdok. This makes the larger western section an island. Accessible from Rapenburg island in the west via Scharrebiersluis and from Prins Hendrikkade and Schippersgracht via Kortjewantsbrug, Kadijken is easily reachable from both of these locations.
