Dapperbuurt, located in Amsterdam's eastern area, is best known for its historical significance as it was established based on a plan drawn up by city planner Kalff at the end of the 19th century. As its name implies, Dapperbuurt was known to attract working-class residents primarily Protestant as opposed to Oosterparkbuurt which had more Catholic inhabitants; there were also significant numbers of socialist workers and Jews residing there, who constructed a synagogue at Commelinstraat in 1881.
Dapperbuurt was severely damaged during World War II, with many Jewish residents being uprooted from their homes and destroyed structures like synagogues and houses. After the war, many streets were in poor condition and it was proposed in the 1970s to demolish several blocks. Action group De Sterke Arm successfully advocated for affordable rents for residents while simultaneously making sure urban renewal projects included them; tenants from old blocks could move into newly created apartments as part of an urban renewal initiative.
