The Indische Buurt, in Amsterdam's East district, dates back to the early 20th century. Its name derives from street names that originate from geographical area names originating from islands within the former Dutch colony of Dutch East Indies; these first street names were introduced around 1900. Sometimes this neighborhood was also called East-Indische Buurt to distinguish it from its counterpart near Surinameplein as well as to refer back to where these streets got their names: Dutch East Indies. Also, other common terms for Indische Buurt during these early decades included Archipelwijk Insulindebuurt and Javakwartier
Indische Buurt was home to 22,776 inhabitants as of 2015 and is situated between the Amsterdam-Hilversum railway line (with Muiderpoort station) on one side, Flevopark to its east, Zeeburgerdijk to its north, Watergraafsmeer Ringvaart on its southern end and Watergraafsmeer Ringvaart on its eastern edge. Divided into two distinct areas by Insulindeweg is known as Indische Buurt Noord and Indische Buurt Zuid respectively; over half of homes owned and managed by three large housing corporations: Eigen Haard, De Alliantie and Ymere; more than half are non-native residents and over an estimated 100 languages are spoken throughout its borders.
Beginning around the end of the 19th century, its history began being shaped by Amsterdam's previous strong population growth. Since 1896 when Amsterdam annexed the remaining portions of Polder Over Amstel, ophoging of its remains and the construction of its initial neighborhood began: an area comprising Celebesstraat, Borneostraat, Molukkenstraat and Atjehstraten streets. The second building phase started in 1908: during this stage, Borneostraat, Zeeburgerdijk and Molukkenstraat were constructed. A third phase finally got underway in 1921 when Amsterdam purchased land at an unprecedented scale; during this phase the Overamstelpolder was expanded further while Zuiderzeepark (later Flevopark) was established.
