Oosterparkbuurt, situated in Amsterdam's Oud-Oost district, is bordered by Wibautstraat, Mauritskade and Linnaeusstraat - three roads which together constitute Amsterdam's Oost neighborhood.
Oosterparkbuurt as we know it today was established near the end of the 19th century, when Oetgenspad was constructed through a polder on what is now Eerste Oosterparkstraat. J. Kalff's 1876 Plan Kalff for Oosterparkbuurt and other 19th-century neighborhoods follows old land division lines such as Oetgenspad, Oetewalerweg (Linnaeusstraat), and Rhijnspoor (Wibautstraat).
Oosterparkbuurt began construction in 1881, followed by its Oosterpark in 1886 to replace Muiderbosch Park located further east. Leonard Springer designed its final layout. In 1926, a corner of Oosterpark where Oosterbegraafplaats once stood was transformed into the Koloniaal Instituut (now Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen). Meanwhile, horse-drawn tram lines to Oosterpark started operating from Alexanderplein to Linnaeusstraat as early as 1884. In 1903, this line was electrified and became tram line 9. By 1906, another tram connection, tram line 11, had been added between Weesperpoort station via's-Gravesandeplein, Oosterpark, Muiderpoort station. In 1942, its link with Weesperpoort was replaced with one through Ruyschstraat - since 1945 tram line 3 runs through this neighborhood.
Due to budget cuts for construction, the initial goal of creating a high-class neighborhood was not fully realized; nonetheless, many beautiful houses were constructed along Oosterpark, including Willem Witsen's house named after him. Furthermore, an expansion of Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis (Anna Paviljoen) originally located on Keizersgracht was also constructed near Oosterpark and this Catholic hospital and Bonifatiuskerk attracted many Catholics while many Jews from inner city resided here - before World War II raids forced many Jews from their homes...
