Weesperzijde is a neighborhood in Amsterdam-East, commonly referred to locally as Weesperzijdestrook. The neighborhood derives its name from its western boundary - Weesperzijde - an eastern quay on the Amstel River that serves as its western border. A neighborhood can be defined as the land area situated along a strip that spans from west to east: Amstel Avenue (west), Wibautstraat (east), Mauritaskade (north) and Ringvaart Watergraafsmeer's exit point in order to join Amstel (south). At its eastern corner lies Parooldriehoek, where Wibautstraat bends under the railway. Administratively, this neighborhood can be divided into three areas: Swammerdambuurt (from Maurittskade to Eerste Oosterparkstraat) with Ruyschstraat serving as its main traffic artery; Weesperzijde Midden/Zuid; and Parooldriehoek.
Part of this neighborhood was constructed on land once belonging to Nieuwer-Amstel municipality and can still be seen today in street names like Grensstraat (its former border) and Marcusstraat, named for Balthasar Marcus (one of its last mayors) which was annexed by Amsterdam in 1896 and annexed into Weesperzijde quay history. At its southern boundary is Van der Kunbuurt built on former Watergraafsmeer municipality land which annexed by Amsterdam in 1921 and features original workers' houses from that municipality whereas this neighborhood contains original workers' housing types from its history; therefore they both feature different architectural styles; in particular Van der Kunbuurt has original workers' housing designs with original workers' housing in contrast with Weesperzijde history and Weesperzijde is known for having historic links to Weesperzijde Quay history as weesperzijde Quay is very closely connected with Weesperzijde Quay (since it annexed by Amsterdam in 1896), annexed from Watergraafsmeer when Amsterdam annexed Watergraafsmeer was annexed by Amsterdam in 1921 due to different histories involved, both neighborhoods have different architectural styles; Van der Kunbuurt being home for original workers' housing constructed during construction period than Watergraafsmeer's history due to differences.
