Amsterdam-Zuid is an Amsterdam neighborhood to the south and southwest of Singelgracht (Stadhouderskade), formed from Vondelpark to Vondelgracht to Westlandgracht to Amstel to Kalfjeslaan at its northern boundary, as well as by Amstel and Kalfjeslaan which marks its eastern and southern limits respectively. Established in 2010, Amsterdam-Zuid merged together former neighborhoods Oud-Zuid and Zuideramstel into one entity.
Construction of the southern city expansions began during the last quarter of the 19th century with the incorporation of areas previously belonging to Nieuwer-Amstel (now Amstelveen) into Amsterdam proper, including De Pijp and areas around Rijksmuseum Museumkwartier and Willemsparkbuurt (Oud-Zuid). Berlage unveiled Plan Zuid in 1917 which featured wider streets with apartment buildings for middle class families as well as including sculpture into public space plans from day one.
Between 1920 and 1940, new city expansions on the former municipality of Nieuwer Amstel were created such as the Nieuwe Pijp, Diamantbuurt, Plan Zuid (rivierenbuurt, Beethovenstraat area and Stadionbuurt) as well as Nieuw-Zuid were developed. From 1987/1990 these neighborhoods have formed the neighborhoods De Pijp Rivierenbuurt Zuid as well as Hoofddorppleinbuurt west of Schinkel which eventually formed district Oud-Zuid until April 30, 2010.
