Museumkwartier is an Amsterdam neighborhood located in its Zuid district in Noord-Holland province. As of July 2017, its population had reached 12,840 and covered an area of 138.55 hectares. Emmastraat, Koninginneweg, Vondelpark, Zandpad Singelgracht Boerenwetering and Noorder Amstelkanaal form the boundaries for this neighborhood. The neighborhood takes its name from three prominent museums situated nearby - Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum and Van Gogh Museum are all located on Museumplein; Concertgebouwbuurt refers to this part of town due to the Concertgebouw being an integral part of it all. P.C Hooftstraat, Van Baerlestraat and Cornelis Schuytstraat serve as major shopping streets while tram lines 2, 3, 5 and 12 all run through.
Museumkwartier can trace its origins back to 1874 when the Onteigeningswet was adopted for building of both Rijksmuseum and fashionable residential neighborhood. House construction did not start until after Royal Waskaarsenfabriek between Pieter de Hoochstraat and Nicolaas Maesstraat closed in 1906 based on designs by Pierre Cuypers from 1891; construction started shortly thereafter in 1907. Jan Luijkenstraat is often considered to be the most beautiful street within Museumkwartier due to houses featuring many Jugendstil elements present within them.
