The Kinkerbuurt is an Amsterdam neighborhood located in North Holland's West district. The neighborhood lies between Singelgracht, Jacob van Lennepkanaal, Kostverlorenvaart, and Hugo de Grootgracht to form an "island" within the city. At its core is Kinkerstraat - named for poet and lawyer Johannes Kinker - with tram lines 7 and 17 service. Ten Katestraat hosts daily markets while Bilderdijkstraat and De Clercqstraat are also key streets with shops and tram lines serving them both.
The Kinkerbuurt was established at the turn of the twentieth century on land annexed from Nieuwer-Amstel during Amsterdam's rapid growth, specifically 1896. Nicolaas Redeker Bisdom, known for revolutionary building projects in West and East Amsterdam neighborhoods such as these, designed this neighborhood, naming streets after writers and poets such as Johannes Kinker. As was typical in these neighborhoods "if Blauw-Wit loses, shell fish sellers will do well". Residents would likely become too upset to eat.
In the 1970s and 80s, as part of urban renewal efforts, several of the worst blocks in Kinkerbuurt were demolished. Eviction of a squatted building on Jacob van Lennepstraat in 1978 caused mobile unit deployment for the first time since 1975 Nieuwmarkt Riots; thus signaling a revival of squatting movements. Subsequently, Kinkerbuurt has experienced major revitalization. Due to gentrification, more well-off residents have moved in while housing prices have skyrocketed; by 2005 it had more address density than anywhere else in Netherlands at 11,971 per square kilometer compared with its national average of 1,865.
Remise Tollensstraat was opened by Gemeentetram Amsterdam (GBB) in 1902. Following their move to Diemen-Zuid in 1996, however, this building sat vacant until major renovation work took place in 2014 to turn it into the cultural center De Hallen. Adjacent to De Hallen on Bilderdijkkade stood a shipyard which served as main office until 1983 for GVB.
