Leidseplein is an Amsterdam neighborhood located on Leidsestraat's extension and bordered by Marnixstraat, Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen and Singelgracht. Dating back to 1660 when construction of the grachtengordel (Fourth Extension) started here; Leidseplein took its name after Leidsepoort stood here until 1862 and marked the starting point to Leiden.
As with other squares in Amsterdam such as Haarlemmerplein, Leidseplein was initially designed as a wagon square where visitors from outside could leave their carts before exploring further. Over time however, Leidseplein gained greater significance when the first Stadsschouwburg (municipal theater) was constructed here in 1774; unfortunately its wooden building burned down shortly thereafter in 1890, only to be replaced by its current iconic structure two years later in 1894. Starting 1875 however it also became a transportation hub with its first horse-drawn tram line starting here!
Leidseplein has long been celebrated through song, as evidenced by Willy Walden's 1943 and Toon Hermans' 1946 compositions: "Als op het Leidseplein de lichtjes weer eens branden gaan" and Toon Hermans' 1946. In the late 1950s and early 1960s it became a gathering spot for young artists known as "pleiners." They frequented cafes such as Eijlders and Reynders where Remco Campert and Kitty Courbois could often be found. Today it serves as an entertainment district complete with terraces, theaters, restaurants as well as street performers who can often be found performing. For winter visitors there's even an ice skating rink on its terrace!
One of the area's most iconic structures is Leidsebrug, designed by Piet Kramer in 1917 and constructed between 1923 and 1925. Spanning Singelgracht and hosting Leidsebosje with two of Amsterdam's largest trees (plane trees with circumferences of over 6.5 meters). One branch even bears a sculpture by an anonymous artist entitled "The Little Tree Climber".
