Centrale Markt is an area in Amsterdam-West best known for its wholesale food market. Established in 1934, this 40-hectare site first took on its current name of Centrale Markt before later changing to Centrale Groothandelsmarkt and then Food Center Amsterdam over time.
Centrale Markt can trace its roots back to the late 18th century when a landfill known as Centrale Asch- en Vuilnisbelt was established on this site, connected by a railway from Amsterdam-Haarlem railway line - making it an ideal location for wholesale markets like Centrale Markt which opened for business in 1934 as an attempt to improve food supplies across Amsterdam. Prior to 1934, an open air vegetable market operated from Marnixstraat at Elandsgracht's end or Prinsengracht before this site existed - both offering similar offerings before being moved here permanently from where they existed!
During World War II, Nazis utilized Amsterdam's Centrale Markt to target Jewish business owners. A portion was designated the "Jewish Market", with visitors needing a red "J" on their market pass to prove they were Jewish visitors. Even though controlled by Nazis, the market also served as a place of resistance; its director Abraham van der Laan was removed as director in 1941. By using false documents to demonstrate their importance for Amsterdam food supplies instead of going directly into concentration camps; many individuals even went into hiding within its basements until after WWII had ended.
After World War II, Hildo Krop created a relief sculpture which was unveiled at the main market hall in October 1959 to honor those Jewish merchants lost during battle. The monument can still be seen today.
