Staatsliedenbuurt is a neighborhood located in Amsterdam's West district, south of Haarlemmertrekvaart canal and west of Singelgracht-Kattensloot-Kostverlorenvaart route. With a rich history dating back to 1877 when Amsterdam annexed it from nearby municipality of Sloten, prior to this it featured numerous windmills just outside city limits with Kostverlorenvaart as an important thoroughfare that opened up this neighborhood; its main attraction was Tweehonderd Roe, an outside the city limits tavern which did not pay any city taxes!
Once Amsterdam annexed it, the neighborhood was given its current name of Staatsliedenbuurt - named after 18th and 19th century statesmen from both centuries - with streets bearing these names. This area was built to meet the increasing need for housing due to a rapidly increasing population; revolution construction provided new worker's accommodation while affordable worker's housing was provided through private investors through revolution construction. Since 1901 when Woningwet (Housing Act) came into force, housing initiatives by Rochdale Housing Associations such as Rochdale and De Arbeiderswoning had also started as well; one can find these initiatives as early Woningwet houses on Van Beuningenstraat!
Tenants living in housing associations had to have steady employment that provided enough income to pay weekly rent, hence why this neighborhood became known as the 'copper button neighborhood". Not surprisingly, this resulted in many Gemeentetram workers being assigned housing in this area and helping found Rochdale housing association.
In the 1980s, Staatsliedenbuurt became notoriously known as an area occupied by squatters centered on Cafe De Rioolrat. Mayor Van Thijn attempted to visit but was driven away by angry squatters; shortly thereafter during an eviction incident there, Hans Kok was tragically found dead.
