Westelijke Eilanden, situated in Amsterdam's center, consists of three islands - Bickerseiland, Prinseneiland and Realeneiland - located south of the IJ, north of Central Station to Amsterdam-Sloterdijk railway line, west of Westerdok and east of Planciusbuurt via Westerkanaal. These three islands constitute Gouden Reael, part of Centrum district that also encompasses Westerdokseiland Westerdokseiland Westerdokseiland Westerdokseiland Westerdokseiland Haarlemmerbuurt Planciusbuurt.
The Westelijke Eilanden is an oasis in itself, perfect for strolling as advocated by Joannes Antonides van der Goes' poem the Ystroom written in 1671, as well as being used as the backdrop for film shootings. From its inception, warehouses and shipyards formed part of its atmosphere combining work and living conditions on its islands; today it's more often referred to as the Mokumse Archipelago than anything else!
The Westelijke Eilanden has a rich and fascinating history, dating back to 1610 when the Nieuwe Waal was excavated from the IJ and secured by rows of poles to expand Amsterdam port. Over three years (1611 to 1615) three artificial islands were constructed amidst this process and protected by a long bulwark running to the IJ. Part of Amsterdam's Third Enlargement which first saw plans released back in 1610 - however land speculation by some members of council such as Frans Hendricksz Oetgens caused a scandal within council meetings during 1614 which could have led to large buyout procedures or reduced income levels if left alone!
Names of the Islands have also changed over time. At first, three large islands were known as Vooreiland, Middeneiland and Achtereiland and connected by eight bridges; Jan Bicker from the Bicker merchant family spearheaded development within city government; Jacob Reael's ship became known as Realeneiland while Middeneiland may have been named after three Princes...
