Overhoeks, a new neighborhood being developed on the IJ -oever in Amsterdam Noord on the former Shell Research Site across from Amsterdam Central Station. This area in the Buiksloterham between the Grasweg en the Buiksloterkanaal will be transformed into a residential and working area, with approximately 2,200 rental or purchase homes, 130,000 square metres of office space and businesses, as well as amenities.
Overhoeks' history dates back to the year 1440, when Amsterdam took jurisdiction of the Volewijk. This was the spit in the IJ that would later drain the Buiksloter and Nieuwendammerham. The Volewijk was fenced off with a gallows pit that was visible from the water. This served as a warning to potential criminals. A brick gallows was built in the first half 17th century.
Johan van Hasselt designed in 1900 a plan to develop the large area of empty land on the northside of the IJ. Plans were drawn up for the relocation and housing of workers, as well as industry on the IJ banks. Around the time of World War I, the first urban activities began. Theo van Heemstede Obelt was granted a loan by the municipality in the same year to relocate his swimming pool to the IJ side from De Ruijterkade, behind the Central Station. The Badhuisweg pool was opened in 14 and featured an indoor pool, as well as an outdoor pool. It also had a café with terraces that offered views of the IJ. It closed in 1926.
