De Bongerd, a neighborhood of Amsterdam's Noord district, is a part of Tuindorp Oostzaan. The area is bordered on the north by Zijkanaal I and the south by the Noordelijke Singel.
The neighborhood was built on an industrial area (including a cement factory) and community gardens complex. Urbanization is also a result of the development. Plans for the neighborhood were drawn up in 1997 and aimed to create a garden-city like the ones found elsewhere in the city. The neighborhood was designed by architect Rudy Uytenhaak. The neighborhood was constructed in phases by different architects, including Paul de Ruiter, Hans Been, and Uytenhaak. The neighborhood has both luxury terraced homes and city villas. The housing crash happened during construction and caused some parts to get delayed.
Bongerd is the name of this neighborhood, which comes from the Dutch word "boomgaard", meaning orchard. The streets have been named after the varieties of fruit trees and cultivars that are grown in the Netherlands. The access roads have names such as Boomgaardlaan Kwekerijlaan and Moestuinlaan.
The old crane from the days of the concrete plant, also known as the Paard van Noord or Horse of the North is one of the most prominent features of the area. The crane was built between 1956-1959 by Koog aan de Zaan and originally served a Velsen concrete factory. The crane was equipped with a platform and then moved to the Zijkanaal I branch of the factory, where it lifted sand and stone from ships as well as for construction work in the neighbourhood. The crane was dismantled and left in the open when the concrete factory closed. However, new residents rallied together to bring it back. Former employees even gave the crane its nickname.
To link the area, several artworks, such as the Druivenbrug and Kadoelenbrug were constructed.
