De Banne is also known as Buiksloterbanne and is located in the northern part Amsterdam. In the 1960s, the neighborhood was created between Buiksloterdijk municipality and Landsmeer. In the past, "de Banne", was one of the six territories that divided the Waterland District. However, after the Batavian Revolution the term was only used to refer to the polder. The Waterland Territories were abolished in 1936.
Banne Noord (north) and Banne Zuid (south) are the two sections of De Banne. The streets have been named after different ship parts and types, as well as maritime concepts. Banne's housing stock consisted of approximately 6,000 houses in 2012. Housing corporations like Ymere Stadgenoot and Rochdale own nearly 90% of these homes. These three companies account for 62% of all housing stocks.
Banne Zuid is a low-rise housing complex located between IJdoornlaan en Buiksloterdijk. It has stacked houses that can have up to four stories. Most of the houses are rented out by Amsterdam housing corporations. Ankerplaats has a shopping mall, while Koopvaarderplantsoen, a central meeting place in Banne Zuid with schools and playgrounds, is the Koopvaarderplantsoen. In June 1987, the BovenIJ Hospital was opened on IJdoornlaan. A new neighborhood was created in 1995 on the former sports fields south of BovenIJ Hospital. The neighborhood is known as Banne Oost, or Buiksloterbanne. It consists mainly of privately-owned homes, from single-family houses to four-story apartments.
Banne Noord was built from 1971 to 1978, on land that had been annexed by the municipality of Landsmeer, in 1966. The area was a sandy wasteland in 1974. However, the first houses were built there in October 1975. Banne Noord was home to 7,500 residents by 1977. It was completed in 1978.
