Oostzanerwerf's history dates back to Middle Ages when it was situated directly on the IJ. The Oostzaner Overtoom was a dam that allowed boats to cross the dam. Since the 16th Century, the area had a trade port, which was mainly used to export goods to the Baltic Sea. Whaling was also done in the 17th-18th centuries. In terms of the number ships that left on whaling missions, the port ranked fifth in Holland. In the area, there are also shipyards and sailmakers.
The Noorder IJpolder in the Netherlands was drained during the construction of North Sea Canal. Through the Zijkanaal I, the port and shipyard of Oostzanerwerf had access to the IJ. The dam was destroyed in 1946. Tuindorp Oostzaan, built after the Noorder IJpolder was annexed in 1921 by Amsterdam, was constructed in the area. In 1966, Amsterdam annexed Oostzanerwerf in conjunction with the construction of A10 ring road.
