De Baarsjes, once an independent borough until 2010, now forms part of Amsterdam-West with 33,847 people living here over 1.64 square kilometers; 0.10 of that space covers water.
De Baarsjes boasts a rich history dating back to the 18th century, when it began as a small village on Kostverlorenvaart canal near today's Slatuinenweg and was connected with city by toll bridge in 1787. One remaining trace is Slatuinenweg which connects it to city. Baarsjespolder was also well known as part of Sloterpolder for market gardens that can still be found there today.
After the opening of the Amsterdam-Zandvoort tram line in 1904, housing development in western Kostverlorenvaart began shortly afterwards. 1908 saw construction along Admiraal de Ruijterweg; homes built specifically to cater to commuters traveling by tram into Amsterdam via Admiraal de Ruijterweg was known as Trompbuurt in honor of Dutch Admiral Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp. Subsequently in 1921 after Amsterdam annexed Sloten municipality into itself after which Chassebuurt was constructed south of Admiraal de Ruijterweg by Amsterdam municipality.
Between 1920 and 1940, new urban developments were constructed on the former municipality of Sloten as part of an architectural Plan West that featured neighborhood designs inspired by Amsterdam School architecture and early modernism. Hendrik Petrus Berlage designed several areas in this style as part of Mercatorplein (named for famous cartographer Gerardus Mercator) which featured world maps in their pavement pavement since 1997; Admiralenbuurt, Mercatorbuurt Surinameplein area Hoofddorppleinbuurt are all part of Plan West that have become part of De Baarsjes since 1990.
