Schinkelbuurt can trace its history back to the Middle Ages when a small community called Dubbele Buurt existed at the end of Overtoomse Vaart near Amstelveenseweg - today known as Schinkel and Amstelveenseweg. Unfortunately in 1930 due to widening plans of these roads it was demolished; but around 1900 an alternative neighborhood emerged on triangular piece of land south of this demolished area called South Schinkel Buurt with revolutionary architecture named streets named after terms found within sailing such as Sluisstraat, Zeilstraat Vaartstraat Vlietstraat Baarsstraat Havenstraat and Karperstraat/-weg etc - which are named according to sailing terms such as Sluisstraat/-weg etc.

Schinkelbuurt is home to numerous notable buildings, such as the former horse-drawn tram depot of Amsterdamsche Omnibus Maatschappij at Amstelveenseweg 134; Huis van Bewaring II on Havenstraat; Gemeentevervoerbedrijf Amsterdam Remise Havenstraat of Gemeentevervoerbedrijf Amsterdam Remise Havenstraat of Gemeentevervoerbedrijf Amsterdam Remise Havenstraat Remise Havenstraat Haarlemmermeerstation; Karperweg and Havenstraat-terrein behind Haarlemmermeerstation which houses many businesses; Havenstraat-terrein extends until Schinkeleilanden.
