Station-Zuid WTC is a neighborhood located within Amsterdam's Zuidas area and in the borough of Zuid. It is famous for being home to railway and metro station Amsterdam Zuid, situated between two lanes of Ringweg A10 (Zuid), thus restricting its expansion potential. Furthermore, this station forms part of Schiphol Airport - Amsterdam Zuid - Duivendrecht - Weesp route.
The neighborhood boasts an interesting past. The current site of Zuiderstation aan de Minervalaan station was first planned as early as 1915 as part of Plan Zuid. Not until 1978 did Amsterdam Zuid officially open as its name indicates; then there was even a shuttle service between Schiphol Airport and this new station. Station RAI was isolated from the wider railway network until 1981, when it was linked with Haarlemmermeerspoorlijn at Nieuwersluis. Service was then extended to Leiden via temporary station RAI. With the establishment of the World Trade Center at Zuidplein in 1985, its name was altered to Amsterdam Zuid WTC. Three years later saw the Zuidtak of Ringspoorbaan open, connecting RAI with Duivendrecht and Diemen Zuid to Weesp respectively. However, that particular addition to the station name was dropped entirely in 2007.
In 2005-2006, renovations to the station took place, wherein its existing platform was extended in a western direction and an island platform constructed south of it; both platforms received two sets of stairs both inside and outside the station hall, as well as being equipped with lifts; furthermore, tracks 1 and 2 were assigned to the old platform instead of their original assignment of 3 and 4, as per tradition.
In 2011, Gustav Mahlerplein's entrance was renovated, including improved traffic flows from the square, an increase in bike rack numbers by half and new shops at its entrance. From January to March 2012, Zuidplein underwent similar refurbishment - while during fall 2012 platforms were extended in an eastern direction.
