Buitenveldert is a neighborhood located in Amsterdam's South district in North Holland and bears its namesake neighborhood off Amstelveenseweg near Buitenveldert Cemetery. This district was previously part of Binnendijkse Buitenvelderse Polder between Amstel on its eastern edge and Amstelveenseweg on its western edge, while west of this avenue lay Buitendijkse Buitenvelderse Polder - all two forms form this neighborhood

Since medieval times, the current Binnendijkse Buitenvelderse polder (formerly "Buijtenveldse polder") has belonged to Amstelland (which later became Nieuwer-Amstel) until it became part of Amsterdam in 1921 via Kalfjeslaan as its southern municipal boundary. Prior to 1854 Buitenveldert had been spiritually associated with Nieuwer-Amstel (renamed Amstelveen in 1964).

Buitenveldert can trace its beginnings back to the Algemeen Uitbreidingsplan (A.U.P) of 1935, which proposed a southern expansion alongside Westelijke Tuinsteden. Construction on this southern expansion started in 1955 with Loosdrecht sand raised over its entirety - with the first stone laid for Buitenveldert garden city opening up for use as early as 1958, followed by its first houses becoming available for habitation by 1959.

With the creation of city districts in 1987, Buitenveldert became its own separate district. Following a merger with Rivierenbuurt district in 1998, however, it became part of Zuideramstel district; which also encompassed Prinses Irenebuurt. Since 2010, however, due to another consolidation between Zuideramstel and Oud-Zuid districts it is part of South district.

Since recent years, the South District of Amsterdam has also included the newly developed Zuidas metropolitan area in Buitenveldert - this includes several large office buildings that serve as hubs of business and finance in Amsterdam.
